procrastination pays

Last week I was given three baskets of green tomatoes to pickle. Mum and I pickled 3 kilos of them without really even making a dent in the pile.

And then I got busy.

And mum went home. (sob sob)

And I lost my green tomato pickling mojo and they sat on the floor of the genkan for a week doing nothing.

Well actually they weren't doing nothing, they turned red.

In the dark, north facing, unheated genkan.

Wow.

So we lose out on adding to the collection (16 so far) of green tomato pickles but gain three big pots of tomato sauce. Not the 13 veg variety this time- my share of that loot was 92 jars. That's enough for this year I reckon. This time I went for straight sauce pommadore- one batch with garlic, one with basil and parsley and the final one with roasted whole habanero chillies. Wow. That one totally rocks!

Now it's all packed up in ziplock bags in the big freezer ready for a bleak winter day in need of some cheerful and warming tomato meal.

They turned green eh? : ) Well I loved what you did with them though by the sounds of it. Sauce pommadore sounds delicious, especially the one with the habanero chili in it. Definitely sounds like it'll put a kick to any cold dreary weather type days. : )

Hmm, now you are making me wonder if I should just go outside and pick the last of my tomatoes and rip out the plant.

there were ziplock bags left when you went to buy them? Impressed Japan. And here I was thinking I'd bought the whole stock. Sauce sounds amazing. If they were North facing then perhaps the God's turned them red.

Can I live with you?

Yup, they turned *red*. If you want to speed things up pick them, leave them somewhere warm and sunny and in the proximity of an apple. Apples emit gasses that ripen other fruit. The stuff I know, huh?

I was using mini ziplocks. Probably only big enough for a Ryu Onesie. Maybe that's why I was in luck? And by the taste of the sauce I think the gods definitely had something to do with it!

Lulu- hmmmm, you have to sign a minimum six month contract (no eating sauce and scarpering) and promise to play scrabble/ scattergories/ trivial pursuit/ boggle/ any language based game at least three times a night. Oh and speak English lots so the girls see there is a point to it. Oh and it would help if you didn't have a dust allergy.... ;P
