You can't eat that

I make K's bento lunch each day. It's really quite easy as his only requirements are maximum volume and go easy on the veggies. So usually it's a packed box of rice topped with grilled fish and a couple of types of pickles and a token vegetable. Sometimes though he has noodles. To be honest this is usually because the rice cooker wasn't turned on rather than a deliberate menu choice. But K is a noodle nut. Really. The guy could eat noodles of some type three meals a day for a very long time. So on no rice days he has cold noodles and toppings. Something like this:

Soba noodles, red shiso pickled cucumbers, mustard pickled cucumbers, ham onion mushroom and cheese omelette, pickled pumpkin and zucchini in olive oil and lemon juice. Ok, today is a bit heavy on the veg and very heavy on the cucumber (welcome to summer at ours!) but not too shoddy, huh? He takes noodle broth in a flask and dips the noodles in it before he eats them.

Well apparently one of the other guys in the office thought cold soba noodles looked like a nice change from endless cold rice lunches. So he went home and told his wife about the soba lunch box idea. This guy is in his fifties so I assume his wife is, too. Apparently she could not get her head around the idea of cold noodles in a lunchbox.

Impossible, she said.
But Fukase-san's wife does it, he said.
You can't eat that, she said.
But Fukase-san does, he said.
You need rice in a bento box, she said.

And he gave up.

And Today K had soba noodles for lunch again.

And you can eat that.

He did eat it.

And he said it was great.

cucumber recipes please..... ones that last for ages in container in fridge - like at least a week and a half would be good :)

Granny K has obviously planted fit million cucumber plants this year cause Shou came in this morning with a bag filled with 30 foreign size cucumbers. Fuck. what to do, what to do... ???

and that obento looks great. Anything they don't have to fix themselves they should be grateful for. One day I will get round to making bentos again - perhaps when one or two of the kids are walking to school!

I agree with katy. Cucumber recipes please! I LOVE J-style pickled cucumber and it is expensive to buy them here.

I used to do somen/soba bentos for both Joey and D when I lived in Japan. That soba bento looks GOOD. :-) Not sure why you HAVE to have rice in a bento but you can see why that guy would want a change after 20 odd years of rice bentos!

My husband is a noodle guy too. He could happily eat noodles 3 times a day...and have more noodles as snacks. Bleck. I can't stand them anymore. (But I like pasta! Go figure.)

And I think I mentioned it before, but cucumber soup and cucumber-yogurt salad are wonderful in summer.
