that's gotta hurt....

I was thinking the other day how rough it must be to be a chook.

I mean having a period once a month is hard enough.

Chooks lay an egg once every 26 hours. Not days- hours.

And (it's a bit gross but) if you think about the size of their vent (where the egg comes out) and the size of an egg it's more like giving birth every 26 hours than just having a period.

And that thought just freaks me out.

Poor chooks....

And then look at this:

That is two eggs from the same chook. The one on the left is her usual egg. About 65 grams. The equivalent of a three kilo baby? On the right is the egg. The egg weighs in at a whopping 120 grams. Wow. Like a six kilo baby!

It just made me cross my legs and go 'owwww!' when I saw it.

I had to go and get her some extra feed to commiserate...

You're so funny... as far as I know, chooks, not having the narrow hips required for upright walking, don't have the same issues with squeezing things out. But who knows?

I don't have chickens, but I have often thought about this, too (joys of being an insomniac!) Ugh! Constant giving birth, and no babies to enjoy. Though, I don't know if having 300+ babies/year would be enjoyable, especially if one was constantly giving birth. Do you think chickens have a really high pain threshold? I hope so. Of course, if you were a Japanese OB you would be putting her on a strict diet at this point. She is lucky in that respect!

As an aside, one of my friends in college was doing research on the witch trials, and found that some women had been accused of being witches for having sex with chickens. Another question to ponder when unable to sleep at 3am, how would a woman have sex with a chicken? And why would anyone think she would want to?

Okay, I will stop writing now as I think you will want to block my future comments.

And to think they don't even get five days in a nice clinic after going through that! Poor things.

Wow! Poor chooks! Constantly giving birth w/out ever getting to enjoying the, um, baby making part! LOL Why is *the egg* so much bigger than the usual?

I imagine it would be more like doing a big poo every morning.

What I want to know is, do they keep laying eggs if you let them keep their eggs and sit on them and bring forth some chicks. Would they raise 300 chicks a year? Or are they laying a new one everyday to replace the one that was kidnapped the day before?

Okay, I'm thinking about this too hard, I'll go have another cup of tea...

Rachel- it certainly doesn't look as painful as birth but they do get very agitated and nervous when they need to go. If I feed them when one wants to lay an egg she gets all torn about what to do and quite stressed.

Gina- yeah, makes you offer up thanks when you eat an egg, huh? ;)

Xana- @_@ You had me pondering the mechanics of that for a whole day! I just can't work it out and I know it's something I really don't want to google!

GW- yeah, although if an egg gets stuck they get a rather intimate massage?

Bryn- It was a double-yolker. The egg equivalent of twins? And not a rooster in site at the moment so nope, no fun and games going on.

Rachel- they lay an egg each day(ish) unless they are moulting, too hot, too cold, too young, too old or clucky. Clucky is when they think they want to raise chickens and they sit on the nest and won't get up bar the briefest break for water and food (hardcore chooks won't even get up for food often enough). This has very little to do with taking their eggs or not. They will sit on someone elses eggs, on a golf ball or even sometimes on nothing at all. Conversely, even if I left all their eggs there everyday there's no guarantee they'd sit on them. It'S all pretty complicated!
