おかず入り弁当

M and A eat a hot lunch at kinder every day. This is a fabulous system in my view: they get a nutritious, locally sourced, vegetable heavy meal- this time of year some of the vegetables used are even grown by the kids in the kinder's veggie garden- and I don't have to make bento.

It's not that I couldn't make their lunch- I make K's lunch each day after all- it's just that the pressure to make kiddie-cute lunches is huge. I get torn between the 'you don't need the tomatoes cut into flower baskets- just eat it!' and the 'but mummy, everyone else has cute lunches......'

And then for my birthday this year my SIL sent me a whole bunch of bento making tools. Sausage shapers, seaweed cutters, star, heart and flower rice ball moulds, the works. I had the misfortune of opening this gift in front of the girls so when they heard today was おかず入り弁当 okazuiri-bento- a full course lunch box- they were jumping with excitement. Amy spent two hours last night jumping out of bed, running to the top of the stairs and calling out a range of lunch related questions, requests and orders "Mummy?! Make lots of star things ok?" "Mummy?! You have to make little rice balls ok? Not big ones, ok?" I told her if she wouldn't go to sleep I wouldn't have time to make any lunch and got a "You have to make bento lunches in the morning, mummy!" for my troubles. Aghhhhh!!!

So, with all the pressure and expectations I got up an hour early this morning and gave it my all. Not perfect but hey, the girls were thrilled and that's the main thing, right?

That and being eternally grateful that I only have to make kiddie-cute bentos a handful of times a year!

Well done! Yeah, thank goodness for kyushoku! And how, exactly, does Amy know the rule about bentos having to be made in the morning?! I, very unusually, made DH a bento for lunch today (well, I was up before dawn with M) and... he left it on the doorstep!! grrrr

Perhaps, you should get the girls to help you make the bentos when those days come. That way they can see how much time it makes and perhaps they won`t ask for it to be all cutsie.

God, did you have to recover with a mid-morning gin?

Riceballs do my head in. I can handle the rest of the bento - and in fact like it if push came to shove - but onigiri, and bear shaped onigiri (we must have some of the same stuff) just do my head in.

I would love to be able to whip up an anpanman or ultraman bento at the drop of a hat though. One day I will start on bento making 101. But not yet.

Well done. Hope the boxes came back licked clean.

WOW! I hear you on the obento=phobia. But, you passed with flying colors! The bento I made today for Jun - I ate - as usual! Oh well!

I think you did a great job and better still I bet the girls loved having an obento that their mummy made for them :)

I am kind of looking forward to making obentos... although I know that I will get sick of very soon, lol!!

I'm always impressed with the Obento stuff you wives/moms in Japan have so graciously learned to live with. I've seen pictures of Obentos over the years that make me want to hang my head in shame. I managed to reheat cabbage soup and stir fried pork (that my husband made originally last night) for lunch today and my husband praised me, without any hint of irony, on my housewifely skills! Hah! I would be laughed out of Japan I fear.

Great job on the cute lunches, glad the kiddos appreciated the effort!

I am terrible at bento making- even adult ones! Shun takes a packed lunch once or twice a week (only because I no longer work and it is usually just left overs- the reason he gets them for lunch now is because I actually make a dinner each night which never used to happen which is why i relyed on leftovers)

Yours were so cute though! My local Daiso has a heap of cute bento making stuff and I am tempted to buy some even though when bub comes it will be months if not years before he/she will want to or need to eat a rice ball. I suppose I should practice now while I have time!!!

Bento 101 sounds like a good idea!

I think you did a fantastic job with the obentos! I love making obento! : )

But like GW said about the rice balls, rice balls are my weakness too. I make them but they stil make me a pinch nervous even after all this time, ha ha ha.
