That takes the cake

I know my ILs are practical people. Pragmatic, down to earth, realists, whatever you want to call it. They already have their graves picked out, they send our birthday presents whenever they find something they think we'd like- sometimes six months early.

Their birthday's are Christmas Eve and Day and we use one cake for two birthdays and Christmas... you get the idea.

But yesterday was pretty amazing even for the ILs.

We drove up to stay the weekend and I took along a banana and blueberry cake. Nothing special, just a visiting for the weekend kinda cake.

Last night, after dinner, MIL unwrapped the cake and told the girls to sing happy birthday to me. Power to them they pointed out that A) it wasn't my birthday yet and B) "Mummy made that cake."

But we did it.

No candles.

Not even icing.

And I made the cake as a gift for them.

Doesn't that take the cake?

WOW... umm hope you liked your cake? Seems like everyone was off to the inlaws this weekend (fun...)

So wait... your inlaws birthdays are Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?! How sad to have all the celebrating bottled up at one time of the year!

And hey - your B-day is coming up soon!!!! I'd sure love it if BG would share it with you!!! (fat chance but I can keep dreaming)

Oh my gosh, that is hilarious!! I can't believe they were using the cake that you made for a birthday cake for you!!!

Your IL's sound kind of sweet though - we don't get cake, or presents or anything for our birthdays/Christmas. We are lucky if we even get a phone call...

Wow, what killjoys. I hate how some Japanese people just don't GET birthdays!

My husband's birthday is Christmas Day. As they never make much of a fuss about either in Japan, it doesn't bother him.

Torn between laughing hysterically and thinking how sad that they couldn't be bothered to get you a cake! LOL! My MIL was always quite good about birthdays and liked celebrating them but I know that 99.9% of J-people aren't like that.

Now I'm feeling very, very bad. I had the nerve to feel a bit disappointed that I got a tiny strawberry shortcake (of course!) birthday cake this year. But my mother-in-law took it upon herself to order it for me. AND she gave me a lovely shirt as a gift. I was really touched that she thought of me and how important this was. I just couldn't help but be a little disappointed that it wasn't chocolate - I didn't let on of course. Still - now I feel like a jerk for even *thinking* it!! I'm a lucky girl. I hope you loved your cake!!
